Essential Question: How do you use all five senses to create evocative description? What is voice and how can you use it to show who your character is?

Agenda:
1. Writing Prompt: Describe one of the following settings in as much sensory detail as possible:

Write for 10 minutes.
2. In your writing prompt, highlight details you used for all five senses. Pick different colors for:
  • sight
  • sound
  • smell
  • taste
  • touch

3. Choose another image. Again, write for 10 minutes. This time, try to use the sense you used the least during the last round as much as possible in this one.
  • Which one did you like better? Why?
  • What is something you need to work on when it comes to writing description?

4. Read the section titled "Anticipation" from Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus (To view this section, click on the cover of the book on Amazon and flip to the page with the section titled "Anticipation." Read until page 6.)
While reading, take notes on the following:
  • Note any passages or details that stand out to you
  • What time period do you think this is set in?
  • Find one example of description for each of the five senses (sight, sound, touch, smell, taste)
  • What is your favorite detail? Why?

5. What does this excerpt teach you about writing setting and description?

6. What is "Voice" and why is it important when showing who a character is?

7. Read the following article: "How to define your Character's Voice" and take notes on the following:
  • What are important considerations when it comes to voice?
  • What, in your opinion, is the most important aspect when it comes to creating character voice? Why? Answer in 3-5 sentences.

8. Who is something in your life who has a very distinctive voice? What do they sound like? What are some of their verbal ticks?
For 10 minutes, write a scene of them interacting with someone they know very well. Pay special attention to what kind of voice they are talking with and apply what you learned from the "How to define your Character's Voice" article.

Assignments:
  • Setting 1 and 2 (include highlights)
  • Notes on The Night Circus and Voice
  • Voice exercise
