Language Objective: Students will choose, discuss and analyze commercials in groups.
Agenda: 
1.) Bell Work: Read this week's Article of the Week: The War on Pink - GoldieBlox Toys ignite the debate on what's good for girls
2.) After reading, respond to the article (see questions below article, write up to one page) 
3.) Watch and discuss GoldieBlox Commercial GoldieBlox & Rube Goldberg "Princess Machine"
4.) Find a partner (up to 3 people in one group) and share a computer to find a commercial that you are going to analyze. Follow this Commercial Analysis Sheet to evaluate your commercial. You will finish and present your analysis on Friday, February 28 (A-Day) and Monday, March 3 (B-Day). 
Note: Your commercial must be school appropriate for your assignment to be counted.

Language Objective: Students will be able to discuss and analyze print ads. 
Agenda: 
1.) Read The Book Thief for 15 minutes. 
2.) After reading, answer the following questions: 
  • Summarize what you have read in one sentence. 
  • How does Zusak develop the theme of death in The Book Thief? List at least two examples in your response. 
  • Choose the correct answer:
              a) I hardly ever buy DVDs anymore.
              b) I hardly ever buy DVD's anymore. 
3.) Remember to submit your Portfolio URL by filling out this form. 
4.) Watch the Audio Commercial "Spock vs. Spock" and list some of the techniques this ad uses to "sell" their product. 
5.) Propaganda/Advertising Technique Handout
6.) Group activity (in-class only): Match print ads to their advertising technique. 
7.) In the next two class periods you and a partner (groups up to 3 students) will choose and analyze your own commercial.

Language Objective: Students will write a reflection on their video reviews and update their online portfolios. 

Agenda: 
1.) Bell Work: Read The Book Thief for 15 minutes and answer the following questions:
  • Summarize in one sentence what you just read. 
  • Why do you think Markus Zusak chose Death as the narrator for The Book Thief? Why is this important?
  • Which sentence is correct?
    a) Supposedly, he canceled our date because of a family emergency                
    b) She supposably sent the check, but it was lost in the mail.
2.) List three goals you have up to graduation (short-term) and list three goals you have beyond graduation (long-term). 
3.) Finish writing your reflections. (Instructions here.) 
4.) Update your e-Portfolio. Remember, you must have an introduction and your goals listed on your page in addition to your updated work from this quarter.

Content Objective: Students will be able to reflect on their video project reviews.
Language Objective: Students will update their ePortfolios and write reflections on their video review group projects. 

Agenda: 
1.) Read The Book Thief for 15 minutes. 
2.) After reading, answer the following questions: 
  • Briefly summarize what you read. 
  • List two main details and why you chose these two details. 
  • Make a connection between the text and yourself, another text or the world.
  • Make a contrast to the text and yourself, another text or the world.
  • List two questions you still have after reading. 
3.) Log into your ePortfolio (weebly, yola, wix, etc.) and make sure you have updated the following: your home page (should at least have an introduction of yourself and your portfolio), your Goals page (list short-term and long-term goals) and update your coursework. 
4.) To update your coursework for English 12 (or 12th grade): Add your video review from Ms. Floch's English Channel. Just find the link here and drag a gray"Youtube" icon onto your page from the menu on the left. You then will be able to copy/paste the link to your video into this Youtube icon. Remember to hit "Publish" whenever you make changes. 
5.) If you do not have an ePortfolio, you will have to create one in class. You can find instructions here and watch a short tutorial on Weebly here.

6.) Once you have added your Youtube video to your page, reflect on your project and your group work during this project. You can find Reflection Instructions and a Rubric here. 
6.) Once you have updated your site (hit "Publish" to save your changes or no one will be able to see them!), fill out this form with your website's URL. You can find the URL for your site under settings. It should be something like: firstnamelastname.weebly.com. For example: www.msfenglish.weebly.com is the URL to my class website. You MUST submit this form in order to submit your URL and get credit for your portfolio and your reflection.

Language Objective: Students will discuss and critique video product reviews. 

Agenda: 

1.) Read this week's Article of the Week: 5 Ways to Judge the Socci Olympics and answer the following questions: 
  • What are three things you learned in this article? 
  • After reading this article, reflect on the author's purpose and who the audience of this article might be. 
  • What do you think the Winter Olympics in Socci will be judged on the most? Explain your answer. 
2.) Share your findings in your groups and with the class.
3.) Watch your period's Video Product Reviews posted on Ms. Floch's English Channel
4.) After watching each video, briefly answer the following three questions: 
  • What was the strongest argument the group made for the product they recommended? 
  • What was the strongest argument against any of the products reviewed? 
  • Which product would you buy after watching the review? 
5.) Write for five minutes about how your group worked together during the production of your video review. Did everyone split the work equally? Did one or more people do all the work? Where there any other issues I should be aware of?

  1. Bell Work: Read The Book Thief for 15 minutes. (Note: if you need to make up bell work, but don't have a copy of the book, stop by my room after school to make up bell work.)

  5. Continue filming your product review. You should be finishing the main body of your video today.

Content Objective: Students will be able to compare two products by evaluating and judging their research and opinions. 
Language Objective: Students will produce video product reviews on iPads using iMovie. 

Agenda: 
1.) Bell Work: Read The Book Thief for 15 minutes. 
After reading: 
  • Summarize the main idea of the passage you just read. 
  • List two main details of your reading. 
  • Make a connection to what you just read. 
  • Make a contrast to what you just read. (Remember, your contrast can be what about your reading is different from the connection you made at the earlier prompt.) 
  • List two questions you still have after reading. 
2.) Share what you have written inside your group, then share one of your group's questions with the whole class. 
3.) Sign and have your parents or legal guardian sign the Youtube Permission form in order to post your finished project on Youtube and on your ePortfolio. 
4.) Sign up for one iPad per group. Remember that you will be responsible for this iPad while you are using it and that you must return it and plug it back into the cart by the end of the class. 
5.) Watch this video tutorial on how to use iMovie. 
6.) Begin filming your video product review. If you want to look at the rubric for this project, you can find it here. 
7.) Check in your iPads and make sure they are plugged in correctly. We will continue filming for the next two periods. The finished project is due at the end of class on February 10 (A-Day) and February 11 (B-Day).
