Content Objective: I can conduct sustained research and cite relevant evidence from texts to support my findings in form of an informational video blog (vlog).  
Language Objective: I will use my research to create an information video blog (vlog) using iMovie. 

Agenda: 
1.) Bell Work: Think-Pair-Share: What is the difference between a vlog and video coverage of news? What are some things to consider when you are producing a vlog? 

BEFORE YOU START WORKING: What are you planning to accomplish today?
Write it down in your Google Doc.

2.) Informational Vlog Checklist
Reminder, your vlog is due at the end of the day on Friday, March 18 (A-Day)/Monday, March 21 (B-Day). 

2.) 2A: Use Adobe Spark to make your Video 
Watch this tutorial on using iMovie on the iPad. 

3.) For the rest of the period, begin creating your informational video blog. You will have next period to continue producing, and the period after that to finish and edit your vlog. 

4.) Exit Ticket (Add this to your GoogleDoc):
  • What did you accomplish today?
  • What did you struggle with?
  • What are your next steps?

Assignments:

Content Objective: I can conduct sustained research and cite relevant evidence from texts to support my findings in form of an informational video blog (vlog).  
Language Objective: I will identify and apply the principles of informational video blogging and discuss their effectiveness both verbally and in writing. 

Agenda: 
1.) Bell Work: Introduction to video blogs (vlogs): Watch John Green's Racism in the United States: By the Numbers
  • For 5 minutes, write a response to this vlog, include your opinion on this issue. 
Share-in: You have 3 minutes to share your response within your group.
Share-out: Have one representative of your group summarize what your group discussed and share it with the class. 

2.) John Green talks about how "data is cold". Do you agree with this perspective? What are the advantages and disadvantages of basing an informational text solely on data? What would make data more interesting to an audience? 
Discuss this with a partner and write down your findings in your GoogleDoc for today. 

3.) Discussion: What makes a vlog effective? 
  • What are the Vlogbrothers doing well in their vlog? 
  • What could they improve? 
  • Based on this, what are components of an effective, engaging vlog? 

4. Informational Vlog Assignment
With a partner or groups up to three, decide on an informational video blog topic (you may use any of the topics you covered in your news articles or come up with a new topic). 

Requirements: 
  • length 2-3 minutes
  • must be informational
  • should be on one of your news article topics
  • must contain at least one infographic
  • must contain at least three cited sources of information

Your schedule for this assignment is as follows: 
  1. Tuesday, March 14/Wednesday, March 15: Research (information, data, pictures) 
  2. Thursday, March 16/Friday, March 17: Adobe Spark/iMovie tutorial, begin producing vlog script
  3. Monday, March 20/Tuesday, March 21: Continue producing vlog
  4. Wednesday, March 22/Monday, Monday, April 3: Finish and upload vlog
  5. Tuesday, April 4/Wednesday, April 5: View and evaluate vlog

5. Determine your group, your topic, and conduct research for your vlog. 
Your research should include pictures as well as information. 

6. Make a story map for your vlog (bullet points will work) that shows its beginning, middle, end and your overall approach

7. Exit Ticket: What topic have you and your partner chosen for your vlog? What are three main points you are planning to cover in your vlog?

Language Objective: I will conduct research and create an infographic using data relevant to the topic of my news article. 

Agenda:

1. Opener: Peer Feedback. Have a partner look at your infographic so far and have them grade your work and offer feedback based on your infographic criteria: 
  • must contain at least three different data sources - 5 points
  • content must be clearly organized and visually appealing - 5 points
  • all content needs to be informative (not opinionated) - 5 points
  • data and design need to complement each other - 5 points
  • all data needs to be relevant to your topic - 5 points
  • sources need to be cited in a text box on the bottom of your graphic - 5 points

3. Finish working on your infographic - Once you are done, download your infographic as a .jpeg file and add it to a GoogleDoc. Name this Doc "Infographic Assignment."

4. To your infographic, add the following reflection: 
  • How did you decide to show your topic in a visual and data-based way?
  • How did you choose to organize your graphic and make it visually appealing? 
  • How does your data and your design work together? 
  • What do you think is your infographic's strongest point? 
  • What would you do differently if you had to do a similar project again? Why? 

Assignments: 
Submit the GoogleDoc with your finished infographic and your reflection to Canvas

1. Bell Work: Think-Pair-Share: With a partner, choose two elements from the infographic above and discuss how you are planning to apply them in your own infographic.

Take notes on this in your GoogleDoc for today.

2. Continue working on your infographics. Use PiktoChart to design your infographic.
As your design your graphic, review the rubric below:

Criteria (30 points total):
  • must contain at least three different data sources - 5 points
  • content must be clearly organized and visually appealing - 5 points
  • all content needs to be informative (not opinionated) - 5 points
  • data and design need to complement each other - 5 points
  • all data needs to be relevant to your topic - 5 points
  • sources need to be cited in a text box on the bottom of your graphic - 5 points

3. Use the last 15 minutes to give peer feedback on the infographics of two others. Ask them to make notes in YOUR GoogleDoc on the following: 
  • What is working well? 
  • What is confusing? 
  • What do you want to see more of? 

4. Exit Ticket: Progress Report (use the last 5 minutes of class to take notes on your progress of your infographic):
  • What did you accomplish today? 
  • What did you struggle with?
  • What are your steps to complete this assignment? 

5. Take a screenshot of your infographic and insert it into your GoogleDoc

1. Bell Work: Current Events
For 10 minutes, read current events articles. Choose from the following outlets:
  • The Salt Lake Tribune
  • The Deseret News
  • The New York Times
  • The Wall Street Journal 
  • The Washington Post
  • The Huffington Post
  • BBC
After reading, open up a new GoogleDoc, title it with your name and today's date and answer the following questions: 
  1. What data or sources are used in the article you read? (Look at statistics and numbers.) 
  2. What can this data tell us about our society we live in? 

2. Begin working on your Infographic Assignment. This will take you the next two class periods and is due at the end of Friday, March 4 (A-Day) and Monday, March 7 (B-Day) 
  • To get started, go to the PiktoChart Website and register for free using the email you are logged into your ChromeBook with. 
  • Other sites you may use to create infographics: Infogram or Canva
  • Here is a quick tutorial about how to get started with PiktoChart: 
  • Begin by researching at least 3 sources of data
  • Decide which visuals (pictures, graphs, etc.) you will need in your infographic in addition to your data
  • Begin customizing and creating your infographic

3. Exit Ticket: Answer the following questions on the bottom of your GoogleDoc: 
  • What influenced your decision-making in deciding which data to include in your infographic? 
  • What do you want your audience to learn from your infographic?

Language Objective: I will identify and analyze traits of infographics, contrast pros and cons, and begin researching data to create my own infographic relevant to my research topic. 

Agenda: 
1. Bellwork: Watch the following video about infographics:
After watching, turn to your partner and discuss the following: 
  • What facts stood out to you? Why? 
  • Based on the video you just watched, what is your definition of "infographic"?

2.) Watch this animated infographic about "If  The World Were 10o People"
After watching, go to the Video Infographics Padlet.

Appoint one Scribe for your group and together answer the following questions:
  •  What information does this infographic give? 
  • What does it NOT say? 
  • What context or background knowledge do you need to fully understand this graphic?
  • What are the pros and cons of using an infographic to present data like this?

3. Watch the first 12 minutes of David McCandless' TED Talk "The Beauty of Data Visualization." 
In your GoogleDoc, take notes on the following question: 
  • What are important considerations when visualizing information? 
4. In your group, view your assigned infographic and analyze it based on the following questions: 
  • What information does the graphic give you? 
  • What does the infographic NOT say? 
  • EarWhat about it captures your attention? 
  • Is your graphic presenting absolute or relative data? 
  • How could this infographic be improved?
