Content Objective: I can identify and analyze symbolism to make predictions about the central conflict in literary texts.
Language Objective: I will identify and analyze symbols in the opening lines of Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha, make prediction about the main conflict, and make connections to a secondary text.

Essential Question: How can you analyze symbols in literary texts to make predictions about its main conflicts?  

Agenda:
1. Library Visit: Choose a young adult literature book to read this quarter. Be sure it is at least 250 pages long. 

2. Reading Journal #1:
  • What is the book you have chosen about and why did you choose to read it?
  • ​What are your expectations for this book? Be specific.

3. Daily Dose of Grammar #1:
Choose the correct sentence from each pair:
a.) Squiggly knew one of the justices of the peace.
b.) Squiggly knew one of the justice of the peaces.


a.) I hardly ever buy DVD’s anymore.
b.) I hardly ever buy DVDs anymore.

4. Download your Digital Copy of Siddhartha. 
Add the Readium Extension to Chrome. Click the + to add your downloaded file to your library. You can adjust layout, font size and page views on your document.

5. Siddhartha Opening Organizer 

 6. Read the first line of Siddhartha, Chapter 1. 


In your group, write down all the symbols you find in the first sentence.
For each of these symbols, create a list of things you associate with them.

7.  What do these symbols tell you about Siddhartha's conflict?

Write a 2-3 sentence prediction.
8. After reading the first section:

  • write down three character traits of Siddhartha (incl. page #)
  • write down three character traits of Govinda (incl. page #)
Share with your group.

9. Siddhartha's Culture:
  • In the “Culture” box of your organizer, write down what you learn about Siddhartha’s culture.

10. Duhkha - A Wheel out of Kilter
  • Describe “duhkha” in your own words.
  • What are examples of “duhkha” in your own lives?

11. Seeing vs. Believing
How is seeing different from believing? Explain.

12. Summary/Reflection:
How do the symbolism in the opening lines of Siddhartha, the concept of “duhkah” and the difference between seeing and believing resonate with you?
How do you connect any of these in your own life?
